What IT Skill Sets are Hot?

In the IT world it has been said the only constant is change.  Change exists at a number of levels: leadership groups, organization charts, job titles/responsibilities, but none is more apparent than the changing technologies that shape the way we do business.  And if the constant influx of new technologies isn’t enough, continuous updates and upgrades of existing technologies can complicate matters even further.  As a result, one of the keys to success in recruiting IT professionals is being able to not only identify current hot technologies but also to successfully project market demand for emerging technologies as well as the new roles and responsibilities created by those technologies.

Projecting the next great thing can be difficult; however, the list below features a few specific areas where we are seeing consistent growth in job requirements.

Project Management

While Project management is not a new area for IT by any means, it has been a fairly consistent job requirement for a variety of clients across multiple industries.  Often Project Managers work closely with functional and technical analysts to insure projects are well defined, well managed and most importantly delivered on or ahead of schedule.

A growing trend in the industry is Project Management certification.  PMI’s Project Management Professional (PMP®) certification is the world’s most recognized professional credential for individuals associated with project management.

Currently, PMI supports over 100,000 members in 125 countries worldwide. PMI members practice and study project management in many different industry areas, including aerospace, automotive, business management, construction, engineering, financial services, information technology, pharmaceuticals and telecommunications.

Document Management/Imaging

As a number of clients attempt to streamline and improve efficiencies, one area being targeted is document management.  Document imaging is the conversion of paper documents into electronic images on your computer. Specific benefits to an organization from creating electronic documentation vs. paper are:

  • Prevents lost records
  • Saves storage space
  • Manages records easily
  • Finds documents quickly
  • Makes images centrally available
  • Eliminates need for file cabinets
