Has Social Media Hindered Your Job Search?

Has Social Media Hindered Your Job Search?

Your resume might make you a recruiter’s dream candidate, but are your social media channels promoting a nightmare?

When recruiters are looking at potential candidates, they don’t necessarily stop at their resume. They may also search for the candidate on Google, LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook and more. In other words, that recruiter could be viewing your latest selfie or status update right now – so think twice about what you post.

Two in five employers use social media to pre-screen applicants, according to a Forbes.com article based on a CareerBuilder survey of 2,303 HR professionals. Two-thirds (65%) do so to gauge a candidate’s professionalism, 51% to see if the candidate is a good fit for the company culture and 45% want to learn more about their qualifications. Some cited “to see if the candidate is well-rounded” and “to look for reasons not to hire the candidate,” as their motives.

All about individuality: Generation X’s time to shine in the Workplace

All about individuality: Generation X’s time to shine in the Workplace

Gen X is squeezed in between two extreme generations: the politically active and ambitious Baby Boomers, and the ‘look-at-me’ social media enthusiastic Gen Ys. Both have very different ways of doing business. When compared with other generations, Generation X has often had trouble being defined as a collective, with little consensus about what makes them distinct.

Having been long cast as a cohort of ‘slackers’ refusing to fully grow up – a generation lacking character and drive, Gen X is coming into its own. Now hitting the prime of their life both professionally and personally, Gen X is leveraging the middle ground between the two generations as a new way of defining leadership and success.

Gen X is finding a foothold as a generational diplomat: straddling both worlds and speaking both languages. New research corroborates this.

“The NCMM Middle Market indicator survey stresses the need for Middle-Market firms to get their houses in order when it comes to recruiting and retaining top talent,” said Tim Oyer, Senior Director of Client Solutions at Hudson RPO. “Middle-market company growth leads the economy, and they show healthy employment growth, but they are now starting to feel the effects of a skills gap and the difficulty in attracting and retaining top talent.”

Survey respondents indicate that 51% of companies grapple with a skills gap and that the “ability to attract, train and retain talent” is one of their top five business challenges.

Getting Past the Resume Bots and Into Human Hands

Getting Past the Resume Bots and Into Human Hands

The increased popularity of resume screening software has become a trend with employers and hiring managers, due to the volume of applications they receive. Many companies are using Applicant Tracking Systems or Automated Resume Screeners to weed out the ‘good’ from the ‘bad’ resumes.

Learn how to get past resume screening software, how resume bots work and what you can do to effectively work with them.

Up your score

Before a human even touches it, your resume is scored against potentially hundreds of other applicants. Automated screening software parses your information into sets of words, then interprets those words and their ‘relevancy’ to keywords and experience defined by the company.

The 6 Most Common Interview Mistakes

First impressions are more critical in fewer places than a job interview, where the stakes are high and nerves can interfere. Classic interview mistakes include coming across as arrogant or overly emotional, talking too much or refusing to answer certain questions.
