You got an interview for a coveted job—congratulations, that means you made the first cut and are viewed as a suitable candidate. But if you don’t wind up with a job offer, you have to ask yourself: What did I do wrong?

New York City Jobs Outlook 2016

New York City Jobs Outlook 2016

Job Growth Prediction Mashup

For the New York City area in 2016, job growth is predicted to be strong, but not quite as robust as 2015. Unemployment at the end of December 2015 mirrored that of the nation overall: 5.0 percent, which represents a two percentage point improvement from the 7.0 percent unemployment rate registered in January 2015.

In 2015, the New York City metro area (New York-Jersey City-White Plains, NY-NJ Metropolitan Division) ranked #111 out of 200 in Forbes’ “The Best Places for Business and Careers” ranking. The Big Apple’s overall ranking was tempered by its high cost of doing business (outranked only by Honolulu in this category); however the city ranked well for education (#30) and job growth (#55).

Do You Really Know How to Market Yourself?

Do You Really Know How to Market Yourself?

You may think that modesty is best to avoid appearing arrogant in a resume or interview, but selling yourself short will do you no favors. If you want to get a job, you have to know how to market yourself effectively.

Selling yourself to a prospective employer is an important part of the job application process. Don’t be fooled into thinking a good “product” will simply sell itself—you still need to get the messaging right.

So how do you find the right balance between effective and excessive self-promotion? The answer is personal branding. Thinking of yourself as a brand will allow you to step back and present yourself as an appealing, consistent, value-adding package.
