Tampa Jobs Market: 2017 Year-to-Date Review

Whether you’re an executive at a Tampa business in need of a recruitment strategy or a candidate looking for a job, it’s important to understand the realities facing your industry and local economy. Here we’ve gathered the most recent news and predictions for hiring and employment in Tampa:

Strong Job Growth in Florida and Tampa Bay

Florida as a whole added 19,400 jobs in June, making it the top state in the U.S. for job creation for that month. The unemployment rate across the state dropped from 4.3 percent in May to 4.1 percent in June, bringing it to the lowest point in a decade.1 The construction industry is seeing robust job growth, with the addition of 31,000 jobs between May 2016 and May 2017. Over the same period, business and professional services, leisure and hospitality, education and health services also added jobs.2

Tampa Bay’s economy has been keeping up with the state’s strong growth. Between May 2016 and May 2017, the metro region added 43,000 new jobs. During the same period, only Orlando saw greater job gains in the state, with the addition of 48,000 jobs.3

The unemployment rate in the Tampa Bay region grew slightly from May to June, rising from 3.8 to 4.1 percent.4

Tampa’s Tech Labor Pool Expands

Between 2011 and 2016, the tech workforce in Tampa grew by 55.3 percent with the addition of 16,140 tech workers, according to the CBRE Tech Talent Scorecard. It was the second fastest growing tech workforce in the country, outpaced only by Charlotte, North Carolina. In its ability to draw and foster tech talent, Tampa ranked No. 27 on CBRE’s scorecard of 50 metro markets in the U.S. and Canada. The region’s strong population growth, pro-business climate and high quality of life influenced its strong ranking on the scorecard.5

Tampa Job Growth in Biotech, IT & E-commerce

Biotech company Amgen is moving some of its operations to Tampa this fall and expects to bring 450 jobs to the region by 2018. The new site will add to the more than 1,100 biotech, pharmaceutical and medical device companies across the state. The California-based business is investing $25 million in the Tampa facility.6

Tampa-based medical device manufacturer Corin USA is expanding its headquarters and plans to add 100 new jobs by 2022. The new positions will be in sales, marketing, operations and administration.7

Vendita Technology Group, a technology and software company based in Toledo, Ohio, is relocating to Tampa. The company expects to fill 15 technical, sales and administrative roles by 2019.8

IT company Vology is adding 200 network operations jobs to its location in Largo.9

In July, Walmart opened a 50-acre warehouse in Davenport. The facility is part of the retail company’s strategy to position itself as an e-commerce leader. More than 500 people work in the facility already, and 1,000 more hires are expected within a year.10
